For just a moment, a fleeting moment, I was carried back in time to what life may have been like in Colonial Williamsburg. A couple hundred of us tourists had just witnessed a reenactment of a tense confrontation between the Governor and one of the town’s leaders. The difference in life status was made very clear by the Governor’s rant on the townspeople. All good theater and quite well done. But, the emotional tickler came as the Governor and his two assistants walked back into the palace and the rest of us were left standing in the mob with re-enactors shouting about injustice, unfairness, etc. And these three figures strutted back, in proper class formation, to the palace. Luxury, privilege, disengagement. Actually, quite alone but perfectly okay with it. Back in time.
